When the voice came through on the phone, I automatically knew I was in for a special treat. The one and only Katerina Kittycat, portrayed by Schyler Rice, sounded just like a magical character from a storybook. I immediately felt a sense of friendship with her, almost as if she was a character emerging directly from a storybook.
Schyler is originally from Northern California and after studying musical theatre in college decided to make the journey to New York. Her dream, from a very young age, was to perform on the stage and showcase her talents. Being a stage performer has always been in her blood; something she has a loving calling to do.
The opportunity to perform in Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood Live! came as a sign. Her nieces watched the television show and she was familiar with the characters and themes. Plus, she felt a strong connection to the powerful work of children's theater and knew this was the chance of a lifetime. Her talent and work ethic are now the main components in her lovable, on-stage character, Katerina Kittycat.
When Schyler talks about the performances, they are more than just a job for her. She knows that theatre is more than just what you see on stage. It actually teaches children teamwork, leadership, and presentation (how to deal with your nerves). The stage is a place to release your creativity and an atmosphere where you share in the emotion of the stage as a complete audience. It's a transformative and memorable process that can truly open a child's eyes to the world around them.
About The Show
Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood Live! focuses on how a regular day can easily become the "Bestest Day Everest" by sharing kindness with your neighbors. What a compelling and beautiful theme to share with our kids!
Schyler considers herself an extension of her character, Katerina Kittycat. She sweetly describes Katerina as the 4-year-old version of herself. She is silly, loves ballet, and sometimes her emotions can get the best of her. I think we can all relate to Katerina! She also loves her friends and is sweet and energetic. In addition to Katerina (our favorite), Schyler knows the kids of Evansville will love seeing Daniel Tiger come to life on stage. She also told us that Baby Margaret is one to watch as her hilarious noises will keep you laughing throughout the show.
Some Fun Behind the Scenes Dish
During breaks, Schyler loves stretching as a way to wind down. She will randomly pop down into the splits (I'm really jealous). She also loves giving hugs!
Before shows, Schyler gets ready for her role in full cat style. Since she has to MEOW so much, she will prepare by singing a song in all MEOW's. She also helps lead the group warmups and loves that responsibility as well.

For Schyler, the most rewarding part of playing Katerina Kittycat is getting to do something she truly loves while making other people's lives better. She adores children's theater and hopes to continue her career with this focus.
This show might be the first live theater experience for children and she puts 110% of her talent and passion into each performance so everyone can walk away with special memories to last a lifetime.
