Friday night is a very sacred time in our house. When the work week and school is complete, we settle down for family pizza night! Typically, we order pizza from a local restaurant but it can be so expensive and definitely not the most healthy option for our picky eaters. We also miss out on the fun of bonding as a family when we create something together in the kitchen.

My oldest daughter (7 years old) loves to cook. I mean loves it. To her, the most magical place in our house is the kitchen because she gets to create something from scratch and, most importantly, be proud of her creation. Last Friday, we decided to hand over the reigns to her to create our Friday night pizza. Boy, was she excited!

I’ll be honest, as much as I love cooking I was at a loss where to begin. When my kids are in the kitchen, it’s the perfect opportunity to get them to try new foods and create. Thankfully, Produce for Kids has an incredible website that is committed to kids having access to easy, fun and produce-focused recipes. I went to the website and we explored all kinds of different ideas PLUS all the guides for how best to use and store vegetables for our pizza. We definitely got inspired!

Since it is Vidalia onion season, my daughter decided this would be an ideal addition to our pizza because of the sweet taste. RealSweet® Onions from Shuman Produce were the perfect option to power our pizza. My daughter and I discussed possible ingredients, made a list, and began creating what she called, The Sweet Gobbler; a turkey sausage pizza with delicious onions!

If you want to see her in action (with her little sister) plus a list of recipe ingredients, check out this video!

Honestly, I can’t believe I got my picky eaters to try onions OR that they actually enjoyed eating them. I have achieved a complete mom victory!

After our pizza adventure, I quickly bookmarked the websites for both Shuman Produce and Produce for Kids. Did you know that Produce for Kids can even help you meal plan with tons of yummy and easy recipes that your kids can create? I’m hooked and now my daughter keeps asking when we can cook again with fruits and vegetables. Who is this kid?

We also invite you to stay tuned as the Macaroni Kid Cooking Challenge (MKCC) will culminate with a live cooking competition on May 7 Southampton, NY. We’ll be crowning two winners -- one for ages 8-10 and another for ages 11-13, who will each leave with an amazing grand prize!
