Spooky by Nature at Goebel Farms

Fall is one of my favorite times of the year, the brisk autumn air, magnificent colors on the leaves, and of course all of the fun fall activities that coincide with it. And if you are looking for a fun way to spend your Friday or Saturday night with your family, we have a can’t miss event for you!

Last weekend MacKid staff and our families were able to experience Spooky by Nature at Goebel Farms. Now, I’ve been to Goebel Farms during the daytime, but visiting at night is a whole new experience of its own.  As soon as we arrived we saw the perfect photo opp for our kiddos with tons of gourds, pumpkins, a scarecrow, and more. After a quick snap, the kids were off! We explored all of the unique pumpkins and gourds in the barn. After another quick picture in the corn husk teepee, the kids zoomed off around the corner. We followed behind them and found they were having a ball playing in the wheat table. They were scooping and pouring as quickly as their hands would go to keep the wheel spinning. I think they could’ve spent the entire evening at that table, but we knew we needed to pull them away because that was only the beginning.

Next, we headed back to another portion of the barn where they have an amazing barn slide. The floor was piled high with straw and the kids (and dads) couldn’t wait to go down the slide. They made their way up the stairs to find the top of the slide.  Along the way, they also found a playhouse that our littlest MacKids spent a lot of time playing in.  Once they reached the slide, you could feel their excitement! Zoom! Quickly one by one they came down the slide screaming with delight. The kids continued to slide and swing on the rope swings until they decided they needed a break for a drink (make sure to try out the apple cider slushies, yum)!

After we finished our drinks it was the perfect time to hop aboard and go on the hayride. The night was perfect and we were even able to enjoy the beauty of a harvest moon! About halfway through the ride, our driver Jenelle, shut off the tractor so that we could enjoy the silence of the night….of course with our four kiddos that only lasted a few seconds, but those few seconds were pretty incredible when you’re used to the sounds of traffic and everyday life.

After we made our way back, we were ready to check out the corn mazes. This year the maze is a tribute to the late great Carrie Fisher, better known as Princess Leia! After checking out the pictures in the barn we found that there are actually two mazes. The shorter one is the words “CARRIE FISHER RIP 1956-2016” and the large seven-acre maze is of Princess Leia herself. We talked to the staff trying to decide which we should venture out on and because of having a few toddlers, we decided to give the shorter maze a go. We turned on our cell phone flashlights and we were ready to hit the path. I was pleasantly surprised by how clear the path was with no cornstalks lying in the way for little (or big) feet to trip on. We even had a tag along to our group, as the friendly farm cat walked through the stalks alongside us. Our older girls led the way, and after a few scares from the dads, we had made our way out in about 15 minutes.

Our night was almost complete, but we couldn’t leave without grabbing the marshmallows we brought to roast over the campfire and make some smores. It truly was the perfect way to round out our fun-filled evening!

If you’d like to experience Spooky by Nature with your family the cost is $10 for ages 13+, $9 for 3-12, and under 3 is free! It only takes place on Friday and Saturday nights through October from 7-10pm. You may bring your own hot dogs and smores fixings or they are available for purchase. They are located at 4745 W Boonville New Harmony Road in Evansville.
