Once upon a time, in a faraway land, lived a little girl who had only one wish. That wish was to play a board game of her very own. For years, this little girl waited patiently while her older sister sat and played games with other children and adults.
"Can I play? Can I play?" was her constant question every Saturday night. All she wanted was to join her family in all the exciting fun.
This little girl, named Ellie, resides in our house and has been begging and wishing to play games with our family since she could speak. Every Saturday night, our family orders pizza, pops up a delicious bowl of popcorn, and picks a board game to play. Sometimes we play at our game table and other times we spread out and lay on the floor of our living room. While we always want to include Ellie in this family activity, it is difficult to find a game that she can easily play and that the whole family will enjoy. Needless to say, I have wanted to play the role of fairy-board-game-mom for years and find something that would be perfect for her.
Thanks to the creativity of Ravensburger, a magical and special delivery arrived this week that has made her dreams come true in so many ways. Oddly enough, this magical delivery even included worms.
Inch Worms, a new game from Ravensburger, is filled with worms, colors and even numbers which is perfect for preschool-aged children; just like Ellie. You get to measure, work on matching, and even catch some worm friends along the way. The game is recommended for ages 3+ and is set up for 2-5 players. The best part is, as a family, we get to spend some time on the floor playing and being silly while using color recognition and matching, counting, and even patience while waiting for each turn. These skills are perfect for our daughter who is getting ready to enter Kindergarten this fall.
HOW TO SET UP (Takes less than 5 minutes)
- Push the heads of the worms through the grassy mound.
- Turn the mound over so you can only see the heads - not the bodies and tails of the worms.
- Spin the mound around (so there can’t be any cheating) at least two to three times.
HOW TO PLAY
- The goal of the game is to create the largest inch worm!
- The youngest player begins by using the spinner and landing on a color.
- That player selects an inch worm and pulls on the head until they reach the color segment that matches what they landed on with the spinner.
- If you land on the “Any Worm” option, you get to pull out an entire inch worm.
- Play continues until all the worms have been pulled out of the mound.
HOW TO WIN
- Every player gets to make an inch worm pile of the worms that were pulled out based on the “Any Worm” option or without matching a color.
- Each player gets to connect all the inch worms they collected, head to tail. The player with the longest connected worm is the winner!
You can also flip over the spinner and use the numbers option instead of colors. Each player would have the option to pull out the same number of segments shown on the spinner.
Let’s just say you will hear lots of laughter and WOWS during this game. My youngest loved spinning and finding the colors on the worms. She actually started naming the worms during the game which was so adorable! The game is quick and fun which is perfect for the attention span of the youngest kids in your family.
