Day trips are one of my favorite things to do with my kids and we are always looking for new places to go that aren’t too far.  Recently I found the Terre Haute Children’s Museum less than a two-hour drive from Evansville and I knew we had to check it out!

As soon as we walked through the first set of doors, my kids’ eyes lit up with excitement!  I am pretty sure they could’ve spent most of the day just playing at the smoke ring table and watching the rings slowly disappear as the traveled up the three-story entryway.  I finally pulled them away so we could really see all there was to offer.

In the first exhibit Fiddling with Physics, we built rockets, racecars, and learned a lot about air pressure, circuits, and electromagnetism.  I was also very pleasantly surprised to see one of the workers there carefully wiping down everything in this exhibit and continued to see that occur throughout our visit!

Onto Fit Gym, where my kids were in heaven with everything this exhibit had to offer about learning how their muscles and body works when they are physically active.  We climbed a rock wall, played on the cardio wall, and learned how the elements of fitness play a role in all the activities we did.

In the middle of the museum is a giant treehouse that is two stories.  The kids climbed all the way to the top, and I took the stairs to see what the second floor had to offer.  Inside the top of the treehouse, they used the air guns to “pollinate” the flowers that were suspended in the air.  We then checked out all the realistic and excitement the Ag-Citing exhibit had to offer.  From combines and tractors to milking a cow, and finding out about all the products corn and soy are used in we felt like we were truly on the farm.

Up to the third floor next, for even more excitement!  We stopped at Build It! first and built with legos and learned about building materials and processes as well.  We were even able to build an arch with the help of one of the amazing volunteers.  Next, we checked out Critter Corner and were able to view a working beehive and then climb in some life-sized honeycombs.  We were pleasantly surprised to see the critters here as well, including a tarantula and a ball python.

The very last stop on our visit was to visit the special exhibit To The Moon and Beyond.  This exhibit will be open through July 28th and is one you won’t want to miss if you have a space lover or future astronaut.  The first thing that caught our eye was right inside the door, the Lunar Arm!  You were able to take control of the arm and move moon rocks, just as astronauts might do in space.  We then geared up to take a walk on the moon.  We created a launching rocket (which you can recreate the launch at home).  The kids were “over the moon” to handle the moon rock samples that are straight from NASA!

These exhibits were only a few of all the exhibits that the Terre Haute Children’s Museum offers.  This museum is sure to pack your day with fun, learning, and some exhaustion.  Check out all the exhibits, hours, and more at https://thchildrensmuseum.com!
