In a previous job, one of my responsibilities was to create, host and be present at events during Money Smart Week. This is a time when financial literacy programs are presented for free and open to the public in order to educate people on how to be smart with their money. At one of the events, I came in contact with someone from the State Attorney General's office who brought several laptops and had them all open to the Indiana Unclaimed Properties website, connected to the A.G.'s office. I had never seen or heard of this before but, MY GOSH, was it an eye opener!
The State Attorney General's office collects funds for a variety of reasons: unclaimed rent deposits, insurance premiums, beneficiary funds, state government refunds, businesses' refunds. They effectively collect and safeguard unclaimed property on behalf of all citizens of Indiana. With accuracy and integrity, they distribute these funds –reuniting them with the rightful owner. There are no hidden strings or fees. They just want people to collect funds they have a right to claim. So far in 2022, over $8 MILLION have been returned through claims!
Of course, I started by plugging in my name, my husband's name, our kids' names, family members, friends, co-workers and actually found money! Over the years I check the site occasionally, just to see if anything has popped up. Recently, a family member found that they were owed a large amount--and they weren't even aware of it!
The path to claim funds is simple. By going to the "make a claim" page, you are walked through the process. Once submitted and verified, your funds are sent to you.
This is totally on the up-and-up and I encourage everyone to click on the site and type in your name---good luck! Indiana Unclaimed Property
