It's A Holiday Somewhere

By Diane Braun October 9, 2023

One of my favorite things to do, when looking for an article idea, is to search out what national day it is.  Not just holidays that are on everyone's calendar, but those days where SOMEONE, SOMEWHERE, felt so strongly about a topic, they petitioned and fought for it to become a "national" day. We just had Talk Like A Pirate Day, one of my personal favorites.  Daughter day, son day, boss' day, pet day. While looking at the October list of national days, here's a few not-so-well-known days I came across:

13th:  M & M's Day

14th: Be Bald Day

17th: Pasta Day

22nd: Mother In Law Day

31st: Knock-Knock Joke Day

Seriously.  There's even more obscure days, if you're interested.  We went HERE to find our list.

So, how can we use this to make some quality family time? Why not celebrate M*M's by buying one of the pound size bags and playing a game? Scoop some out after dinner, give everyone a scoop, now you have to tell us one thing that happened today for EACH M&M. Design a mosaic using M&Ms. Sort by color for younger kids.

Same with pasta day.  Buy several types of dried pasta.  Let everyone choose a cup full of their favorite to add to the dish. Discuss as you eat:  why did you choose bowtie pasta? Does it taste different? If there wasn't bowtie, what would you choose?

Dad jokes are a big thing now.  But what about knock-knock jokes?  There are some truly silly ones out there. Ahead of time, find some knock-knock jokes, write or type them out. Leave the punch line blank.  Give everyone a slip with joke, they can read it and fill in the punch line or ask everyone else to give the punch line. Something like this could lead to several different punch lines, some of them personal or familiar to the family:

Find those national days that are relevant to you and your family.  Mark them on the calendar.  Create ways to celebrate. Everyday can be a celebration in your family!
