Need Help With Math?

Huntington Learning Center Can Help

September 7, 2024

Math is a subject that “clicks” with some students and is an ongoing battle for others. Declining grades are a clear warning that your child is having difficulty with math, but there

are many other indicators that trouble is on the horizon. Here are a few red flags to watch for that could be signs of deeper issues:

INCOMPLETE HOMEWORK – When your child doesn’t even attempt homework problems, there’s a good chance they’re missing essential building blocks of math skills. Because math is a cumulative subject, learning more advanced concepts requires mastery of essential basic concepts. So, math worksheets with half the problems unfinished or teacher comments on homework indicating that your child skipped assigned problems should be cause for concern. Your child may not have the knowledge they need to complete those problems.

HEAVY RELIANCE ON VISUAL AIDS/MANIPULATIVES – Early math instruction often uses tangible objects to explain concepts to students. As students move through elementary school, those concrete objects become replaced with pictorial representations — think diagrams or pictures. Some students start to stumble when math becomes more difficult. Take note when your child seems confused by the concept of something, such as multiplication or division. They might need support applying their concrete understanding of math facts to more complex concepts.

TROUBLE KEEPING UP – Math is a challenging subject that requires significant effort and persistence, but if your child always seems behind on math homework or spendsan overly long time doing it, pay attention. Their grades could sometimes reflect their level of effort, but as small gaps in knowledge grow larger, these gaps can become more problematic through the next grade level. Your child might be able to work around their lack of understanding for a while, but not forever.

STRESS IN ADJACENT SUBJECTS –In middle and high school, math skills become essential in other subjects, such as chemistry and physics. Your student might begin to encounter difficulties with these math-intensive subjects if their advanced math skills are not as strong as they need to be. In every grade, there are common math pitfalls that can trip up students — even those who are generally good at math. Practicing math is inherently mistake-prone, and it’s normal for your child to find some areas or concepts easier to comprehend than others. That’s part of learning and growing, but if your child is constantly struggling, they need help.
