As summer begins in Evansville, families look forward to a well-earned break. While relaxation is important, summer is also a valuable time to help children stay academically engaged, build
confidence, and strengthen essential learning habits.
At Huntington Learning Center of Evansville, we believe learning should be personalized, engaging, and effective—whether during the summer or throughout the school year.
The Power of Summer Reading
Just a few minutes of daily reading can help prevent summer learning loss. The key is consistency.
Recommended daily reading time:
Ages 4–6: 10–15 minutes
Ages 7–9: 15–25 minutes
Ages 10–12: 20–30 minutes

Supporting ADHD & Executive Function Skills
For children with ADHD, the loss of school structure over summer can make it harder to stay organized and focused. These challenges are tied to executive function skills such as planning,
time management, and task initiation. Summer offers a low-pressure opportunity to strengthen these skills through everyday activities.
Simple ways to build skills:
Cooking or baking (planning and attention)
Gardening (responsibility and persistence)
Board games (focus and flexibility)
Building projects (organization and sequencing)
Planning outings (time management and problem-solving)
A consistent daily routine, visual checklists, and positive reinforcement can further support success.
