A new school year brings new opportunities, fresh routines, and sometimes a few worries. Whether your child is excited to head back to school or feeling anxious about the year ahead,
August is the perfect time to build confidence, strengthen learning habits, and set the stage for success.
At Huntington Learning Center of Evansville, we believe every child can succeed with the right support. Here are a few ways families can make the transition back to school a little easier.
Back-to-School Parent Checklist
Before the first report card arrives, help your child get off to a strong start:
Establish a consistent bedtime and morning routine.
Create a quiet, distraction-free homework space.
Read together for at least 20 minutes each day.
Practice math facts for a few minutes each evening.
Use a planner or calendar to track assignments and activities.
Encourage your child to ask questions and advocate for themselves.
Schedule an academic evaluation if your child struggled last year.
Small habits established now can make a big difference all year long.
Executive Functioning: The Skill Every Student Needs
Success in school isn't just about knowing the material. Students also need executive functioning skills to stay organized, manage time, focus, plan ahead, and complete assignments
independently. These skills benefit every student and are especially important for children with ADHD or those who struggle with organization. Huntington recommends establishing routines, using calendars and checklists, breaking assignments into smaller tasks, and gradually building independence to help students succeed throughout the year.
Five Signs Your Child May Need Extra Academic Support
If your child is experiencing any of these challenges, early intervention can make a tremendous difference:
Homework takes much longer than expected.
Reading or math causes frustration.
Missing or incomplete assignments become common.
Confidence in school continues to decline.
Teachers express concerns about academic progress.
Our comprehensive academic evaluation identifies learning gaps and creates a personalized plan to help your child succeed.
Teacher Tip
Instead of asking, "How was school today?" Try asking:
"What challenged you today?"
"What made you proud today?"
"What did you learn that surprised you?"
These questions encourage meaningful conversations and help you better understand your child's school experience.
